Under the rock garden’s warm stones, Iris kept hearing a tiny clink-clink above her rosette leaves. She wanted one silver seed from the tall bell-blooms before dusk, when their cups closed tight. So she slid out from her cozy pebble hollow, past the little yellow flowers, and into the thin, cool shade of the tallest stems.

A beetle with a shell like wet ink waited on a leaf. “Trade,” it clicked. Iris gave up the dew tucked between her thickest leaves, and the beetle led her through a tunnel of stems that smelled green and sharp. At the top, no silver seed waited—only a bell-bloom humming softly.

Then Iris heard it: clink-clink, the sound of hidden drops tapping inside every flower. The beetle tapped back, and the bells opened just enough to sprinkle her with moon-cool water.
