🎨 How to color it

Color the skeleton’s bones ivory, the jack-o’-lantern head a bright pumpkin orange, the corn stalks golden green, and the crescent moon pale yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the rib cage, corn kernels, and leaf veins so the narrow lines stay crisp. Try making the sky a deep blue-to-purple gradient so the orange pumpkins and glowing face stand out.

The carved pumpkin head perched on the skeleton’s neck is grinning wide, and tucked behind one of those triangular eyes is the softest surprise in the whole cornfield.

Right as the stars blinked awake, Jasper lifted one bony foot over a curled vine and froze, listening. A tiny sound—plink, plink, plink—came from somewhere among the pumpkins. Can you find the crescent moon above Jasper’s right shoulder? Its silver tip was pointing straight toward the tallest corn stalk, where a hidden seed-bell was chiming in the breeze.

Jasper stepped carefully down the narrow dirt path, past the big pumpkin in front and the ears of corn peeking from leafy husks. Inside the pumpkin head, behind the left triangle eye, rested a sleepy field mouse on a bed of corn silk, ringing the tiny bell whenever she dreamed. “Easy there, Nib,” Jasper whispered, his rib cage still as a porch swing at midnight. Look near Jasper’s feet for the little fallen leaves; he padded around them so they would not crackle. Then he stood guard under the moon, smiling his jagged smile, while the hidden bell tinkled softer and softer until the whole pumpkin patch seemed to breathe in its sleep.
