🎨 How to color it

Color the sunflower petals golden yellow, the oval seeds chestnut brown, the stem grass green, and the two broad leaves deep emerald. Use a sharp pencil for the tiny seed ovals, then switch to smooth marker strokes for the long petals and open leaves. Try making the petals darker near the round center and lighter at the tips so the flower seems to glow outward.

The story behind this coloring page

Under the buzzing roof of the community garden, Pippa clicked together her hand-cranked Sunflower Machine from bottle caps, wire, and a spoon handle. She wanted it to count every seed in the tallest sunflower before lunch. Click-clack, click-clack went the crank, while warm pollen dust tickled her nose.

The machine’s pointer hopped around the brown center in wobbly circles. Pippa wrote numbers on her wrist, her sneaker, and finally a leaf because she ran out of paper. “No peeking, petals,” she whispered. The sunflower only nodded in the breeze, which seemed rude and also funny.

Then one seed popped up like a trapdoor, and a striped beetle wearing a pollen mustache leaned out. “Your machine is counting my windows,” he said. Pippa stared, then giggled so hard the spoon handle spun backward.

So they made a better plan: Pippa counted the seeds, and the beetle counted beetle windows from the inside. By lunch, her machine had a new tiny doorbell and a proud sign that said BUILT BY HAND. Next time you see that round seed spiral, can you spot where a beetle might install a front porch?
