Under the paper-bright leaves of Sticker Thicket, Bex pressed a pebble into warm sap, making tiny stripe stamps. She wanted to mark her petal jars before dusk, but the sap went squish, squish, and would not hold a line.

A secret hum slipped from behind a star-shaped burr. Two plain little bees peeked out, smelling of clover and rain. “We need night coats,” one whispered. Bex’s face grew warm with pride as she rolled her handmade stamp across their soft backs: stripe, stripe, stripe.
