Behind the steamy lamps, before the Cupcake Cafe had a proper hello, Ember sanded a wooden sign with sugar-dust on her elbows. She had painted every letter herself, slow as syrup, and wanted the first customers to know this place was made by hand. The trouble was the sign kept tilting left, and the bunting strings went ping! every time she climbed the jelly-crate ladder.

Then Ember checked the one place nobody checked: under the spoon rest by the espresso machine. Tucked there was a flat silver button, smelling faintly of cinnamon. She pressed it with her mixing spoon. Clack! The crooked sign lifted, the lamps blinked, and a hidden hook snapped into the wall as if it had been waiting for her.

Ember raised the spoon high. “Secret fixed!” she whispered, proud down to her paper wrapper. Ever since, every maker at Cupcake Cafe greets the room with one spoon in the air; if you spot Ember’s spoon, you know exactly where the first salute began.
