She climbed the tall white letters of her name with a pocket full of wool fluff, but the breeze kept puff-puff-pushing it away. The nest smelled like rain and dry twigs. “Just one warm bit,” Avery whispered, tucking the fluff where nobody would notice.

A gray cloud slid close, hiding her hands. Then another came, and another, until the sky made a soft wall around the nest. The bird gave one tiny chirp, not loud enough for thanks, and settled over the eggs. Ever since, cloud-birds build their nests above Avery’s name, where clouds gather to keep secret helpers secret.
