The cat’s steady gaze past the roses seems to have caught a question only the window can answer. Warm light slipped through the tall panes, drawing bright paths across the wooden shelf and the fern’s tiny leaves. Marlow had set himself a careful challenge: count every sunbeam before the largest cloud reached the round sun. He started at the left pane, where trees pressed close to the glass, then followed the shining lines toward the little houses beyond the fence. A trailing plant brushed his tail, but he did not turn.
