🎨 How to color it

Color the rescue truck bright red, the rooftop light bar sunny yellow, the floodwater pale blue, and the little houses soft tan. Use chunky crayons or markers for the truck’s broad hood and giant tires, and don’t worry if the water lines stay loose and wiggly. Try making the splashes around the tires a lighter blue than the deeper puddles so the truck looks like it is really rolling forward.

All morning, Elvin rolled slowly down Ripple Lane with a bent tin whistle tied to his mirror. Plink, plink went rain on the roof. He wanted to find the house that needed help, but every porch looked empty, and the brown water covered every walkway. The whistle had belonged to his aunt, who said, “Wait for the small sound.” So Elvin waited, even when his big tires itched to splash ahead.

At last, a tiny toot came from the water by a mailbox leaning sideways. Elvin stopped. Behind that mailbox, three kittens shivered in a laundry basket, hidden by the flood’s shiny ripples. “There you are,” Elvin whispered. He carried them to dry steps, and the neighbors learned the secret: tip a mailbox toward the road when quiet help is needed. Ever since, rescue drivers watch the leaning boxes first. Next time you see one, listen for the small sound.
