Under the cool evening clouds, Cleo tapped her paw on a raspberry yarn ball and began her private challenge: count ten cozy C’s before the first star blinked twice. “One curl, two curls,” she whispered, nose twitching at the woolly smell. She counted the moon-shaped cloud, the curve of her tail, the cup of the hill, and even the crooked little chimney on the far house. The grass made a shhh-shhh sound, so Cleo waited between each count, very still and very pleased with herself.

Then the yarn gave a sneaky wiggle. It had not rolled away; it had been slowly drawing its own curly C in the grass the whole time. Cleo opened one eye, snorted a tiny purr-laugh, and added it as number ten. Patient paws got the best surprise.
