Through the trees, Rowan sprang onto the wide stump just as a rustle shot behind the rocks. His fluffy tail swept the bark rings, and one paw skidded on a smooth groove in the wood. For a heartbeat, the forest seemed to hold its breath. Then Rowan dug in with his claws, steadied himself, and lifted his whiskered face toward the leafy tangle overhead. The runaway beetle flashed between two vines, and the chase was back on.
