Across the craft table, Rex rolled seven paper crayons he had wrapped himself. Snip-snip went the scissors, tap-tap went the glue stick, and waxy colors smelled like a fresh art box. He lined them up beside his big cardboard 7 and said, “This will be my bridge!”

He pushed the red crayon first, then orange, green, blue, purple, pink, and brown. A tiny beetle with a shiny shell marched out from under a scrap of paper. It tapped the 7, then tapped each crayon, as if reading a secret map.
