Every night, Quilla counted the stars reflected in Starwater Trench and tried to make one ripple that would touch them all. She tapped the water with her front flipper: plink, plink, hush. The silver surface smelled faintly of salt and cool stone, and the moon curled above like a listening shell.

Until one night, a sudden up-current folded her ripple into a spiral and pulled it deep. Because of that, tiny fish followed the shining twist, thinking it was a path. Because of that, old anemones opened early, spilling pale blue light across the trench walls. Quilla held her breath as the whole dark water began to glitter.

“I can’t keep this to myself,” she whispered. She swept both flippers wide, not to make one perfect ripple, but many. Circles crossed circles, carrying star-glints to every cave, frond, and sleepy shell. If you trace the swirls around Quilla next time, you may find the first ripple that tried to touch every star.
