🎨 How to color it

Color the sea turtle’s shell moss green with lemon-yellow scutes, make the flippers seafoam green, and give the spiral shell a peachy pink swirl. Try making the top waves two blues—sky blue on the high curls and teal in the lower swoops.

Under the tickly green light of the reef shallows, Pip tucked a little spiral shell under his flipper. He had rubbed it with sand, tied it with sea grass, and called it his Parade Badge. “Ta-da!” he whispered, and the bubbles went plip, plip, plip.

He paddled past the sleepy anemones and wavy ribbons of kelp, holding his badge high. A crab clicked his claws like tiny castanets. Pip made the badge spin, and it made a funny whoop-whoop sound.

Then the shell answered, “Ta-da!” in Pip’s own squeaky voice. A baby hermit crab peeked out, wearing Pip’s sea-grass knot like a hat. Pip giggled so hard his flippers wobbled. Together they led the smallest parade in the reef, and next time you spot that spiral shell, listen for its proud little whoop-whoop.
