Every evening, before the moon turned the water silver, Kiri tapped the dull pearl tucked under her chin. Tap-tap. She wanted it to sing, the way her mother said it had sung on the night Kiri’s egg first rocked in the sand.

Until one evening, the pearl stayed colder than a pebble, and Kiri’s shell split with a tiny crack. Because of that, she froze instead of pushing out. Because of that, the other eggs went still too, listening to the reef hum low and soft.
