A crab offered to hurry her along, but Luma moved slow, slow, slow. The seagrass brushed her cheeks, and one tick faded away.

At the meadow’s edge, a bright starfish giggled. “Wait with me,” it said. Luma waited while the water hummed. At last, the starfish lifted one arm, and there lay a shiny shell seed, ticking with trapped moonlight. Luma carried it home, softer and slower than before.
