Under the burrow shelf, Bram tapped an empty sign: B, b, but no blue stone to finish it. He packed a biscuit, pushed his little boat from the muddy bank, and let the brook carry him past reeds that hissed, “B-b-b.” The oar splashed cold drops onto his paws. Around the first bend, a silver ripple bumped the boat and whispered, “Not there.”

Bram gave his biscuit to a hungry water beetle riding the ripple. “Where, then?” he asked. The beetle clicked its tiny feet and pointed to a daisy on the shore. Beneath it was no stone, only a blue petal shaped like a small b. Bram brought it home and tucked it on his sign. Now the burrow door looked as if it had always been waiting for him.
