🎨 How to color it

Color the zebu sandy tan with soft gray horns, make the big Z and little z bright lemon yellow, and give the tall zipper a deep teal fabric with silver teeth. Use a sharp pencil for the zipper teeth and grass blades, then switch to a broader marker or crayon for the smooth letter shapes and the zebu’s body. Try shading the inside edge of each Z with pale orange so the letters look sunlit against the cool zipper.

Under the whisper prairie’s tickly grass, Zadie pressed her nose to every tuft, looking for one dry place to nap before the moon-moths came out. The ground smelled of rain and crushed stems. Then came a tiny sound: zzzt, zzzt, like a bug with metal wings. Zadie wanted to stay by her warm, trampled hollow, but the sound slid away through taller grass. She stepped after it, losing a sweet mouthful of clover to the mud with a soft plop.

The zzzt led her to the old fence where no one grazed, because the grass there stood too straight and too quiet. A giant zipper rose from the earth, its pull tucked low behind a blade nobody had bothered to bend. Zadie’s knees wobbled. “Just one tug,” she whispered. The pull was cold on her nose, and when it moved, a seam opened in the prairie with a hush of dry, starry air. Behind it lay a small hollow, warm as hay and smelling of sun. Zadie carried back a silver zipper tooth that had popped loose—not for a bed, but for a brave little bell. Next time the grass says zzzt, can you find where Zadie first dared to tug?
