Under the tickle-cold sky, Tavi hugged a folded scarf beneath his chin. It was only a scrap of cloth from the castle lantern fair, but it held every giggle, bell, and cinnamon smell from the best night ever. Tavi wanted to keep that happy glow all to himself, tucked close where no one could borrow it.

Then the wind gave a sneaky whoosh. The scarf snapped open behind him, wide as wings, and all its tiny festival sparks spilled across the dark. “Psst,” whispered Tavi, “did you see that?” The hills blinked. The bare trees shivered silver. Even the sleepy moon smiled.

So Tavi stopped clutching and started swooping, letting the scarf trail joy over every roof and branch. Ever since, bats wear night-capes in secret on the happiest flights, and if you peek at Tavi’s swirly cape, you might spot one spark he saved for you.
