Above the cloud crossing, a welcome lamp blinked low: puff, pause, puff. Bram tucked the roost’s heart-warm pebble under his chin and flew out to borrow a brighter glow from the star jars. The night smelled like cold rain and sugar-dust, and mist beaded along his wing tips. Halfway there, a giant shadow sighed beneath him.

It was a sky whale, drifting between clouds with frost on its lashes. “I can’t find the song current,” she whispered. Bram’s pebble warmed so fiercely it tickled his chest, but sharing it meant the lamp might stay dim. He pressed the pebble to the whale’s forehead. A rosy hum rolled through the clouds, and the whale’s joy rang out like low bells.
