Every evening, beneath the copper dome, Caro rubbed the old festival mask with a square of velvet and whispered, “One moonbeam, just one.” She had challenged herself to catch the first silver thread in the mask’s empty eyes before the tower clock gave its soft bong. Usually, dust and lavender polish were all she caught.

Until one evening, the shutters clicked open without a paw touching them. Because of that, cold blue light spilled across the floor and woke the painted stars on the mask. Because of that, the mask lifted in Caro’s trembling wings and hummed like a seashell full of sky.

Caro could have tucked it back in its drawer. Instead, she slipped it on and stood still as moonlight poured through both eye holes. The dome above turned, slow and grand, showing a path of stars no chart had named. “I see it,” Caro breathed. Next time you notice those round eyes and tiny stars, see if the first silver thread is still waiting there.
