🎨 How to color it

Color the Ferris wheel spokes cherry red, the ticket booth stripes sky blue, the carousel canopy lemon yellow, and the roller coaster rails silver gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the wheel’s narrow spokes and tiny gondolas, then switch to markers for the larger booth roof and open paths. Try making each cloud a different pale sunset shade so the whole fair feels like it is glowing before evening.

The story behind this coloring page

The Ticket That Knew Home — Under the clack-clack song of the vacation fair, Elara kept patting the tiny pocket of her shorts. Read the full story →

Under the clack-clack song of the vacation fair, Elara kept patting the tiny pocket of her shorts. Inside was a bent ticket stub, soft at the corners and smelling faintly like kettle corn. She had brought it from last summer, when her family had laughed so hard on the Ferris wheel that lemonade came out of Uncle Ray’s nose. This year, she wanted the same car, the one that stopped at the very top where the clouds looked close enough to borrow.

The line curled past the ticket booth, where the seller’s bracelets jingled like little bells. Elara’s cousins pointed at the roller coaster hills and the carousel horses, but she rubbed the faded number on her stub: 8. When their turn came, the seller winked and slid fresh tickets across the counter. “That old one still has a job,” she said.

At the top of the wheel, Elara held the stub to the sun. The number 8 became two tiny loops, then two tiny faces, then a secret map of every person waiting below. The stub had not remembered a seat; it had remembered the feeling of everyone arriving together. When you spot the waving riders and the ticket line, see if you can find where Elara’s clack-clack summer belongs.
