Color the backpack cranberry red, the wooden trail sign honey brown, the pine trees deep forest green, and the far peaks cool slate blue. Under the tallest fir, Junie pressed her palm to a fresh wooden arrow and whispered her vacation challenge: hang one sign before the grown-ups caught up. The board smelled like pencil shavings and sap. Two miles to the peak, she had painted, very carefully. But when she lifted the arrow, her knees went fizzy. Left pointed toward a mossy hollow. Straight pointed into a thicket. Right followed the narrow path beside the whispering creek.

Here is the secret part: the mountain wind was watching. It slipped between the pine needles with a shhh-shhh sound and nudged the arrow in Junie’s hands. Not hard. Just enough to make the right end dip toward the trail. Junie swallowed, tapped in the first nail, and said, “All right, wind. We’ll be brave together.” The hammer’s knock bounced off the rocks like tiny applause.

By sunset, every hiker had followed her arrow and reached the overlook without a single wrong turn. Ever since that sap-scented morning, trail signs have pointed the sure way first, as if a small wind is still helping.
