She wanted one big, cold sip to share with her cousins after their sandcastle parade, but the sun kept warming everything—sip, drip, sigh. Then a gull with a sea-glass-green eye landed on the cooler handle. “Follow the shade lines,” it croaked.

Willa lifted the plain beach umbrella and saw thin shadows sliding across the blanket like secret roads. She painted one road blue, one road yellow, one road red, humming with the waves. The umbrella twirled, and cool air spilled down with a whoosh that smelled like salt and melon. Everyone ran in laughing, cups clinking.
