The floppy buckle on the witch hat sits a little crooked, suggesting this sweet kitten has already been up to something. Behind the bare trees, the winding path looped around the pumpkin like it was pretending not to point anywhere. A tiny bat swooped past the crescent moon and squeaked, “Wrong turn, Poppy!” Only then did the kitten blink her huge eyes from under the wide brim. She tapped the jack-o’-lantern’s stem, and its grin popped open like a door. Inside were six stolen star cookies, one moon-shaped whistle, and a note reading, “For emergency midnight mischief.” Poppy purred and blamed the hat.
